ABOUT FREEFORM TECHNOLOGY
The Optical Industry is poised for significant change, thanks to the introduction of Freeform surfacing to the lens manufacturing process. The transition to Freeform Technology will be a watershed in the history of eyewear, much like the transition from Bifocals to the original progressive corridor lenses. There are three major reasons for this.

NEW 3-D TECHNOLOGY SYSTEM FOR CALCULATING SURFACES
This extremely accurate calculating system opens the way to a new more advanced stage in the creation of designs for progressive lenses. 3-D Technology represents a qualitative leap forward in the design of progressive lenses in three different areas.

1 Three dimensional specification of design variables

a. We can now design progressive lenses in three dimensions, thereby allowing complete control of all designs.

2 Ray tracing evaluation of the optical system

a. The unique system of Ray and Wave front tracing makes for efficient evaluation of standard power and astigmatism parameters, as well as more serious aberrations, thereby improving users quality of vision.

3 Design development using surface optimisation and computation algorithms

a. The technology develops a surface recognition system that allows for accurate combination of the prescription and progressive surface on the same side of the lens. This system makes it possible to provide more precise atoric progressive lenses on the concave side.

What this means is that the progressive surface on the concave side provides for:

  • An expansion of the field of vision at all distances because the progressive surface is closer to the eye.
  • A reduction in magnification differences (unlike conventional progressive lenses whose surfacing is on the outside) were objects might seem to change size, were lenses with the progressive surface on the inside, allow wearers to see objects at a more constant size. Thereby reducing the feeling of dizziness by 25% and making adaptation easier (similar to wearing single vision lenses or not wearing spectacles).
  • Minimum optical aberration, given that the bases are chosen in accordance with the wearer's prescription in order to provide maximum visual quality.

The Freeform range makes use of the latest advances in ophthalmic lens production:

· With CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Technology the surface is numerically controlled during the cutting and polishing process and the speed and positioning of the cutting tool is monitored with micrometric precision. This state of the art technology eliminates all the disadvantages of traditional production methods.

· Flexible Freeform polishing on the inner or concave side is performed using flexible moulds. This technology makes it possible to achieve the perfect combination between progressive geometry and the wearer's prescription, with an accuracy of up to 0.01 dioptre.

SUMMARY THE ADVANTAGES OF FREEFORM PROGRESSIVE LENSES

  • The lenses are easier to adapt to, given their extremely low aberration level and smooth transition.
  • Wider field of vision at all distances, because the progressive surface is nearer the eye.
  • Guaranteed immediate adaptation. Owing to reduced dizziness and balance problems.
  • Quicker adaptation, thanks to optimal design ergonomics that fully respect the routine movements of new presbyopes and wearers of progressive lenses with a different design.
